Valbom Social Housing

A small affordable housing building located in a residential neighborhood of Alcochete, on the southern bank of the Tagus River, 30 minutes from Lisbon. The program is exclusively residential: eight apartments.

The plot is rectangular but the layout of the upper floors is trapezoidal, creating a transition between the 1990s architecture, characterized by cantilevered volumes, and the new buildings with flat façades. The apartments are entered through an open bright area, with direct access to the balcony, where the sunlight greets the residents. The kitchen and bathroom areas are treated as blocks that structure the flow of the continuous social space, sometimes narrowing, sometimes opening pathways, without relying on doors.

Finally, the rear balconies, spanning the entire width of the building and overlooking a pleasant small square, filled with light in winter and shaded in summer. They take advantage of optimal solar exposure, with variations in elevation and the sun’s azimuth adjusting to the ideal solar incidence throughout the year.

Edifício de Habitação Social no Valbom

Um pequeno edifício de habitação pública a custos controlados situado num bairro residencial de Alcochete, na margem sul do rio Tejo, a 30 minutos de Lisboa. O programa é exclusivamente habitacional: oito apartamentos.

O lote é rectangular mas a planta dos pisos superiores é trapeizodal, promovendo a transição entre uma arquitectura dos anos 90 caracterizada por volumes balançados e os novos edifícios de fachadas planas. Entra-se nos apartamentos por um espaço luminoso com acesso directo à varanda, com o sol a dar-nos as boas-vindas. Os compartimentos funcionais de cozinha e sanitários são tratados como blocos que organizam a fluidez do espaço social contínuo, ora apertando, ora abrindo passagens, sem recorrer a portas.

Por fim, as varandas de tardoz são abertas em toda a largura para uma simpática praceta, cheias de luz no Inverno e sombra no verão, tirando partido da boa exposição solar, com a variação de elevação e azimute do sol a reflectirem o ajuste à incidência solar desejável em cada altura do ano.
